Day 6--Hot Heat, A Little Bit of Rain and a Tricky Route
There is definitely a difference in Mid-June weather in Maine, and along the North Carolina coast. The temperatures are hotter, the humidity is higher and the chance of afternoon rain showers is much more likely. With that in mind, we embarked on a tricky route, as we stayed in the state of North Carolina all day. We saw temperatures as high as 96 today, and storm clouds moved around all day long with pop-up showers. Our lunch stop in Clinton, North Carolina was awesome, with more than one hundred local classic cars on display to welcome the racers. Our favorite picks out of the group were the Plymouth Superbird, and the Boss 429 Mustang--good stuff! From there, we motored on to Wilmington, North Carolina, where we were greeted by a great crowd and another quick burst of rain. Overall, it was an awesome day of rallying but tomorrow we're going to pack a few more waters in the cooler, as we roll into South Carolina.
Normally, if we have a lot of ground to cover (like our four-state day earlier this week) the routes cover a lot of ground as well. In today's route, the goal was to really get serious with the rallying and put the racers to the test. Countless turns made it tough for the teams to stay on track, as some of the turns were taken at speed and some of them were at stop signs (which requires a 15-second stop).
