Competition Divisions

The Great Race is one of the most competitive automotive events in the country, and its division structure helps keep that competition close. Each class groups teams by experience and past performance, giving competitors a fair opportunity to contend within their division while giving fans another way to follow the race.

Grand Champion

This division is reserved for competitors who have previously won the Great Race. If any member of a team has been a Grand Champion, that team competes in this class. It represents the highest level of experience in the field and includes some of the most accomplished rally competitors in Great Race history.

Expert

The Expert division is filled with experienced Great Race teams that have consistently demonstrated strong performance but have not won the overall event. Placement in this class is based on results from previous years, making it one of the most competitive divisions in the field.

Sportsman

Sportsman brings together a wide range of Great Race competitors, from longtime participants to teams who simply love the challenge and camaraderie of the event. It is often one of the larger divisions and features an especially varied collection of vehicles.

Rookie

The Rookie division is for first-time Great Race competitors. Every year, new teams take on the challenge of learning the rally, navigating the route, and competing against other newcomers. Many return in future years after getting their first taste of the Great Race.

X-Cup

X-Cup introduces young people to vintage automobiles, rallying, teamwork, and competition. Teams are generally connected to schools, youth programs, or other organized groups and compete while developing hands-on skills and becoming part of the Great Race community. Learn more about X-Cup Legacy.
