Nine Great Racers Advance to New Division

February 9, 2022

When Olivia and Genna Gentry won the 2021 Great Race in Greenville, South Carolina, everyone knew that they would be competing in the future in the Grand Championship division. But they are just two of nine Great Racers who have advanced to a new division. The other obvious ones are the winners of the Sportsman Division, Jeff and Kylie Hermanson, who advance to Expert Division by virtue of their Sportsman Division win. Another way to advance out of Sportsman and into Expert is to finish in the Top 10 overall, and two other teams did just that. Eric Frankenberger and Aaron Read finished seventh overall as Sportsman Division competitors in the 1941 Ford pickup truck, and James and Lou Goode finished ninth overall in their 1965 Corvette. Those four will now compete as Experts in any future Great Races. And one other longtime competitor advances from Sportsman to Expert, and that is Jim Caudle, who captured his third Top 5 daily finish (the other way to move from Sportsman to Expert). If that comes as a surprise it is because for years Jim has navigated for Richard Fredette and now Mike Weaver, and both of them were Experts which meant Jim was competing as an Expert even though he was a Sportsman. Congratulations to all nine who have graduated to a new division.

  • I was fortunate to attend the last time you came thru the Madison area. I am looking forward to seeing you in Sun Prairie this time.

  • Looking forward to seeing you in Wisconsin Dells 6-23-2022. I’ll be there in my 1990 Buick Reatta Convertible. (Like the Official Pace Car of the 1989 Great Race .)
