Great Race 2018 Day 8 — Nova Scotia Shake Up

June 30, 2018

Great Race 2018
We’ve had some HOT days on the Great Race in years past. 100 degrees with extreme humidity in The Villages, Florida and 115 degrees in Lake Havasu, Arizona come to mind. But we had an unexpected hot one today, as we crossed into Nova Scotia. This part of Canada is known for its frigid weather, and we were expecting some cool temperatures, even though it is the last day of June. We saw temperatures as high as 30 degrees Celsius (we’re having to switch gears and get used to Celsius readings, but our Canadian friend MotorMouth is helping us with easy conversion formulas. Anyway, if you mix today’s temperature with some intense sunshine and a bit of humidity, we had a hot day in Nova Scotia.

Our day started in Moncton, New Brunswick, but our route quickly sent us to the back roads, with beautiful views of the ocean and a distant glimpse of Prince Edward Island. From there, we crossed into Nova Scotia, and the first town we went through was Amherst. It was full of people who cheered us on as we rolled through the streets on a fuel break. We ended up in Truro, Nova Scotia for lunch, and we were blown away with the turnout! People crowded the streets, and Farmer’s Market area to get up close and personal with the Great Race cars. Our afternoon route put us into Nova Scotia farm land, with beautiful valley views and a few hilltops along the way. We finished in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, with a great view of the Waterfront from Alderney Landing.

Yet again, we had a shake up in the standings and this time it was a BIG one! John and Scott Hudson had a stellar day in their 1940 Chevy Master coupe, taking home the daily win with a score of 7.65 seconds, with our previous front runners scoring higher than normal. That sent the Hudsons into the lead with a sizeable margin, going into our final day of rallying. The last day of the Great Race is a half-day rally, but the scoring staff makes it tricky, usually with several check points on the short route. One thing is for certain, we’ll find out who can put together a great day of rallying tomorrow afternoon! Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post as we will announce the winners!

  • I noticed several very cool vehicles around the Halifax / Dartmouth area the past couple of days. I had to google Great Race to see what it’s all about and here I am. You never know what we will have for temperatures here in Nova Scotia…but frigid is rarely one of them. Anyway – welcome !
