Great Race 06
The 2016 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty has been announced, and the event will start in downtown San Rafael, California on the same streets where the movie American Graffiti was filmed in the early 1970s. The 9-day, 2,400-mile antique car rally will kick off Saturday, June 18, 2016, in San Rafael and will visit some amazing sites along the way including the Golden Gate Bridge, the California wine country, Lake Tahoe, the Bonneville Salt Flats, the Rocky Mountains, Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, the Badlands and the Mississippi River.
Plans for racers in San Rafael has been in the works for many months, and they include several private car collections, wine tours, a movie premiere and incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The 2006 Great Race finished in San Rafael as tens of thousands of spectators filled the streets to witness Dave Reeder and Sawyer Stone win the event in their 1916 Hudson Four Passenger Speedster.
The finish will be in Moline, Illinois on Sunday, June 26. Other overnight stops for 2016 include Reno, Nevada at the National Automobile Museum (home to the Thomas Flyer that won the 1908 New York to Paris Great Race); Elko, Nevada, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Rapid City, South Dakota, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The 2015 Great Race finished June 28 on the Santa Monica Pier with Howard and Doug Sharp winning $50,000 in their 1916 Hudson Pikes Peak Hillclimber. More than $158,000 in prize money was awarded to the field of 112 cars. Entries are currently being accepted for the 2016 Great Race, and it is expected to sell out in record time. Hi Jeff:
I am interested in participating in the great race, I own several 60’s era cars, but i would like to enter a 1967 vintage race inspire corvette. Is this acceptable? How do I applied?
thank you:
Roberto
Roberto: Please email me at [email protected] and I will send you an entry form. Your 1967 Corvette would be a perfect fit for the event.
Hi Jeff, will there be a stop in Reno NV, and Algona IA?
Reno yes. Algona no.
Interested in finally doing a Great Race after 20 yrs.. Probably running a 1966 Mustang 289 4 spd. or a 1932 ford roadster 350/350. will either one work? Thanks for any help
I see the race will make a stop in Cheyenne mid-week (Wednesday) June 22nd. If I and some of my club members want to come to Cheyenne, will there be any specific activities or events planned? Where can we see the racers and cars?
Thank you!
