Great Race 2022 – Day 1 – Warwick, RI to Windsor Locks, CT

June 18, 2022

We’ve been waiting on this day all year! This morning, we dropped the Green Flag at beautiful Rocky Point State Park in Warwick, Rhode Island. Actually, the green flag duties were handled by Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee and Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi. An estimated crowd of 10,000 people swarmed the park and lined the streets throughout Warwick to wave farewell to the racers. It was an epic way to start the 2022 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty Drivers Club! From Warwick, we headed into Connecticut, on a scenic route through small towns, rolling hills and beautiful historic homes. As the afternoon wore on, the racers were faced with a challenging set of instructions, but were able to come off the clock and enjoy a fun afternoon with a Pit Stop at Wayne Carini’s F40 Motorsports in Portland, Connecticut, and then a great evening stop at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. The temperatures dropped and so did some precipitation as the cars made their way in to the Parc Ferme. We were able to check out the museum and eat a great dinner inside. Congratulations to Eric Frankenberger and Aaron Read for winning the day with an astonishing 2 second score! They got 4 aces with only 5 checkpoints!

Hope some of the route will be on HISTORIC ROUTE 20. Have a couple of vehicles I don’t want to miss. Congrats to Eric and Aaron.

  • Nice to see the surprise pass thru Bloomingburg NY today. Safe travels. Saw the “Great Race”emblems. Found this site, sat for a bit in a parking lot, and tracked car numbers as they passed. Got stuck behind “Elwood” for a bit on Old 17, (quite the contraption) wasn’t sure he was gonna make it over the mountain pass.
    Enjoy all.

  • As we were cruising around in our ’66 Malibu, we ran in to a number of these teams getting gas in Lisbon, we thought, “what an incredible treat!”. We then took off to get ice cream. After our sweet treat, we were heading home (just off 207 and Clubhouse) and saw the same group as they were cruising past their checkpoint in Lebanon. Thank you for recognizing the beauty of our farming community! What an extra special day it was for us. Wishing you all safe travels!
