Great Race 2021 Day 6: Owensboro to Lexington, Kentucky

June 24, 2021

Day 6 of the Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty Drivers Club kicked off in Owensboro, Kentucky and it was a day PACKED full of rally maneuvers. Today was less about covering a bunch of ground, and more about putting those teams to work! We crossed over into the Eastern Time Zone today, so that made for a short morning, before we rolled into the lunch stop in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. From there, we zipped over to Bardstown for a pit stop at My Old Kentucky Home State Park. We enjoyed a few minutes of hanging out under the shade trees before getting back into an action-packed afternoon route. Hills, hard turns and TONS of speed changes wrapped up the day’s rally, before rolling into a great evening stop at the Griffin Gate Marriott hotel in Lexington, Kentucky. The beautiful lawn offered a great parking area for the cars, and once again, we enjoyed a nice crowd. Tomorrow, we cross into West Virginia, so stay tuned!

  • Thanks so very much for stopping in Elizabethtown, my dad & I had a couple of memorable hours together at the Sports Park.We both enjoyed seeing a ’65 Comet included. My dad bought me one back in about the early 90’s for my first car.We still have it in our collection,it’s a hardtop.

  • While we see the cream rising to the top, it is great to see so many Sportsman teams staying right there and pushing the Experts and Grand Champions to stay on their game. I so enjoy the daily summaries and the plethora of incredible photos, taken both on the road and at the stops.
Isn’t it amazing how quickly the time passes as competitors get into the critical stages of the event? No more throwing out scores soon!
Best wishes as you head into West Virginia!

  • Really great to see all the cars and teams in Lexington last night. Thanks to the Blues Brothers team for the route directions. You went right thru my hometown, Mt. Eden. And all around my home County of Shelby. I know those roads very well!

  • Thank you for a lovely evening in Lexington last night. Our kids had a great evening learning about the cars. We just happened to be driving by.

  • How cool the “Great Race” shot near Frankfort in 1964. The opening scenes of the 1964 “The Great Race” comedy were filmed near Frankfort at Mereworth Farms, and the 2021 Great Race returned to the Bluegrass.

  • Just happened to be in Bardstown and visited My Old Kentucky Home State Park. It was a pleasant surprise to come upon all the cars in the Great Race. We had planned a visit several years ago when they had a lunch stop in French Lick, Indiana, and enjoyed it very much. Good luck in this years race and safe travels.
