Note: This is the sixth of a nine-part series of Great Race Director Jeff Stumb’s thoughts on each day on the 2015 Great Race route after returning from setting up the stops for next year’s event. After almost two full days in the state of New Mexico, on Day 6 the 2015 Great Race participants will quickly arrive in the state of Arizona. And they will spend the next two days in the Grand Canyon State seeing its highest mountains and its lowest valleys.

On this day they will climb over the course of the day to more than 9,000 feet above sea level. But first, a trip through the Petrified Forest will take place. Then a lunch in Winslow, Ariz., where, of course, the racers will see the famous “Standing on the Corner” mural.

The afternoon will surprise many as the terrain changes from high desert with no trees to huge mountain pines.

And the day will end in beautiful Flagstaff on Aspen Street, just one block off Route 66 and the same location of the last stop in Flagstaff on the Great Race in 2007.

The next report will cover Flagstaff, Arizona, to Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
