Tifton, GA to Chattanooga, TN — Day 2 of the 2017 Great Race

June 26, 2017

With an exciting first day behind us, we knew that today’s route would be lengthy to stretch from Tifton, Georgia to Chattanooga, Tennessee with a couple of stops along the way. Even if you hopped on the interstate, the drive from Tifton to Chattanooga is around 300 miles, and we certainly didn’t go the interstate the whole way. Our day actually did start with a brief interstate run for speedometer calibration and it led us to our official starting point. After some twists and turns, the racers rolled through a few small towns on their way to Newnan, Georgia. About 25 miles west of Atlanta, this small town is beautiful, and it’s also home to several of our racers, including the Caldwell family and the Knowles and Gentry families. Town was overflowing with people, and the crowd got even bigger after all of the nearby churches dismissed.

The racers hit the road again, and made the trek to Armuchee, Georgia for a Pit Stop at Wayne Vick’s collection. From there, it was a matter of navigating some tricky terrain, as we got closer to the Tennessee state line. Finally, it was time to invade the Coker Tire compound, otherwise known as Corkyville. A crowd of thousands gathered to welcome the racers, and many of them brought out their old cars to offer an awesome cruise in for the racers to view as they inched closer to the finish line gate. Entertainment at the Chattanooga, Tennessee stop included a private dinner inside Corky Coker’s Museum, live music, rides down the Tennessee River in “Duck Boats” and of course an open house at Coker Tire and Honest Charley Speed Shop. It was truly an awesome visit to the Scenic City. Today was another tight day for scoring, with David Reeder and Sawyer Stone barely edging out Richard Fredette and Jim Caudle by .09 second. Check out all of today’s scores here! Just be sure to click on the “Stage 2” tab. Tomorrow the Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty tackles some mountain terrain on our way to hosted stops in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Bowling Green, Kentucky!

    • Hi Bill, the Great Race does not publicize the exact route, as the mystery of the route is part of the challenge of the race. The racers do not receive their course instructions until about 30 minutes before they head out for the day.
