Time is flying by as The Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty winds its way across Route 66. Te recap, we have travelled from Kirkwood, Missouri, through Springfield, MO, through Oklahoma with stops in Claremore, Oklahoma City and Elk City, into Texas with one stop in Amarillo. It has been a long drive through New Mexico, stopping first in Tucumcari, then Sante Fe. Yesterday saw visits to Albuquerque and finally by last evening we reached the western side of the state with our night stop being in Gallup.
With another time change, we find ourselves this morning in Winslow, Arizona…two hours before the arrival of the set up crew and /or any cars! Finally, some quiet time to reflect on what is a quickly passing event!
It was 20 years ago yesterday that Tom McRae and I met in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. The Great Race was starting from my home city on July 1st, 1995. That was my introduction to this great event.
Here I am, ‘standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, such a fine site to see’… a line taken from The Eagles’ first hit single, “Take It Easy”, waiting to see Rodney Rucker show up in some classic Rucker vehicle. He always brings something very different. From this area, Rodney is one of the real ‘characters’ of this event. It will be great to see him again! Wislow is very much in touch with its past and in tune with the present. So much to see, so little time…La Posada Hotel, McHood Park & Clear Creek, The 9-11 Memorial, Old Trails Museum and close by the Meteor Crater and the Homolovi State Park…With each Great Race, I inevitably add things to my must return to see list!
From here…we’re on our way to beautiful Flagstaff…
