Don Currie, a friend to many in Great Race. If you have been around the Great Race at all you probably remember Great Race Staffer, Don Currie. Don was the guy who always had a smile for you when we arrived into the next Great Race town, then asked politely how your day was in his gentlemanly Southern Texas style accent. Don was in charge of Great Race technical inspections for many years, and was one of my first requests of Rally Master John Classen to ask to come back to help out with the new Great Race. Don and Kelly both enthusiastically said that they would be here in Chattanooga and be a part of our new team. It feels good to put many of the old friends back together for this wonderful event. It is with great sadness however that I received a call that Don passed away on Monday. As some of you know, Don also was very involved in helping with the Pate Swap Meet held at the Texas International Speedway. It seems he might have had a serious health issue some time Monday which may have caused a single auto accident and, well….Don got to…
Yes, Motor Mouth! Many of you probably guessed from the hints that I gave you recently that Motor Mouth (aka Brian Goudge, our favorite Canadian) will be our announcer in the noon and evening gates. We are very pleased to have this notable voice leading the Great Race events in each city as we make our way North during the Hemmings Motor News Great Race. If you want to send him a quick note of encouragement, and thanks for agreeing to be a part of the re-birth of Great Race….shoot him an email at bgoudge@bell.net! You could even give him hints about what to say about your car. Entry list coming, so check back today or tomorrow. From the road, c
We have fifty cars entered so far in the Hemmings Great Race. I think that is pretty dang good for mid April! We will get another 20 to 30 more by race time for sure. It is going to be a good event! Our staff here is doing some great work and continue to work hard for you. Angelia Summers and the crew in the marketing department are designing hats, signs, press releases, ads, posters, videos, etc. We have a new respect for the likes of Sister, McRae hisself, Rex and Judy and even the Ewing boys…this is a lot to do! David Leach has been working the sponsorship direction hard. As I have related to many, it is a big hill to climb to even make this deal break even, so be patient with us. We will be in pictures! You will see Jason White and his crew the whole week filming for television. You might even be asked to do some one on one interviews etc. We will need every single participant, staff and volunteer to sign off since Jason might make you a star! Crystal Wilson has been working with entrants to get their photos and information…
“The adventure of a lifetime that you can enjoy every summer!” That’s one of the descriptions that my good friends Tom and Sandi McRae used to describe the Great Race. Well, by now many of the Great Race followers know about its recent history and why Coker ended up with it. Bottom line is this thing we call the Great Race is really such a cool thing that it has to continue. We plan to have people filming the event so to possibly produce television. I think the networks and the cables are starving for automotive content. We have a great team working on this year’s Hemmings Motor News Great Race. Jim Menneto and the wonderful folks at Hemmings Motor News are a major reason Great Race continues! Rally Master John Classen is the best at what he does. Wes Kliner is so fired up about Great Race that we cannot hardly contain him! Most everyone knows veteran racer Jeff Stumb. Jeff has been working on the entrants and cities. He has zero interaction with us about the competition or the course allowing him to be able to compete in the event. One of the biggest negatives I had bringing…
