Day 4 of the Great Race–Flat, Fast and FAR

Well, it was mostly flat, but definitely fast and far on today’s route. The variations in today’s terrain and climate was mind-blowing and we made the most of a long day of rallying. Our start in Elko, Nevada put us on I-80 for a moment, and then we dipped off the Interstate to zig zag through the town of Wells, Nevada in one of John Classen’s challenging mazes. Cars rolled through the town and turned on nearly every street along the way…turning left, turning right and eventually making their way out of town. From there, the racers hopped back onto I-80 for a lengthy transit into Wendover, Utah for lunch. It wasn’t a hosted lunch stop, so the racers were on their own to find lunch, and then spend some time at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Unfortunately, the coolest part of the Salt Flats (the Speedway) was under water, so our group didn’t get to spend any time testing the limits of our vehicles. It was a great photo opportunity, so we snapped a few pics and got back on the road.

The afternoon route was full of varying terrain. Racers were faced with another maze, and a couple more doses of I-80 transit time. We made our way through Salt Lake City, and jumped off the highway for a pleasant drive through Hoytsville and Coalville before navigating some great scenery. We saw the beautiful Echo Reservoir, the Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail and the Echo Canyon, all of which offered breath-taking views and lots of chances for us to grab photos along the way. As we made our way to the evening stop in Evanston, Wyoming, we noticed the 1918 American LaFrance on the side of the Interstate with a flat tire. The Wandering Troubadours of Finland team changed the tire quickly and got back on the road, despite the passing traffic and narrow shoulder. The town of Evanston welcomed the Great Race with open arms, as we invaded the Evanston Roundhouse for a fun evening and a great meal. A charity car wash was a great treat for the racers who had a long day of Eastward travels. With a tough day of rallying behind us, we congratulate the team of G.R. Pike and Bobby Hadskey in their 1916 Hudson for an astounding three second score on a super tough day of rallying. Take a look at our highlights to get a sense of all the sights from another big ol’ day on the 2016 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty.
