Whahoo…Louisiana!

June 29, 2013

Safely tucked into my room in Covington. LA…this has been an awesome day. From Baton Rouge, I drove west towards Texas until arriving in Crowley, Louisiana for our lunch stop. Crowley is the home of some terrific Great Racers (Ed Habetz and Tom Regan) and did they do it up right! With awesome crowds, a great welcoming committee, great music and a lunch offering food that I had never tried before (like crayfish, gumbo and jambalaya, the experience was truly one to remember. From Crowley, backtracking along I-10,  I sent a text to friends who travelled that road with me before, stopping to have an incredible boating experience at the Atchafalaya Swamp, the largest wetland and swamp in the United States. I arrived in Covington, LA for the evening stop. Again, huge crowds, music, Cajun food and enthusiasm welcomed the Great Racers to an amazing venue. We lost a number of competitors today…hopefully they can get fixed and complete the final day in Mobile, Alabama tomorrow. The end is near. What an exhilarating experience to be able to be a part of the Hemming Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty!

  • I was in Covington today with my two son’s. We were standing , by motor mouth. I had a great time. Glad that Covington was on the route. Enjoyed looking at the cars, as they came in. Was able to talk to some of the drivers, and have a closer look at their cars & trucks. Thanks

  • I would like to thank all of the towns that supported us, and fed us so well on this Great Race. We really enjoyed meeting y’all,. Nothing like Southern Hospitalty

  • Girls Scout Troop 2016 and Boy Scout Troop 70 of Crowley had a blast today bringing the Great Race drivers and navigators cold bottles of water as they parked. It was a hot humid day but I think we had the best job of all of the Welcome Committee workers because we were able to see each car and great each participant! Thanks so much for stopping in Crowley and letting us be a part of your adventure. You opened up the minds of many youth and got their heads dreaming dreams and setting goals. We have a wonderful little town rich in heritage and culture but the opportunities of the world are endless, you just have to pick a road and start your own race!

  • Thank you for driving in the heat and humidity to Crowley. We had 19 members of our AACA club from Lake Charles travel (including 5 antique cars) to see your wonderful vehicles. We have a lot of young new members who had never seen the Great American Race, and they were very impressed with all the driving you do! Hope to see The Race again soon.

  • It was hot here in Covington, La., but the cars and drivers were even hotter. We so enjoyed hearing the background information about the cars and drivers and seeing the drivers and their navigators smiling faces. My daughter and grandaughter came from Cumming, Georgia and so enjoyed it.
Please come back again and Thanks Again for stopping in Covington.

  • Caught the activities at the Covington, La. stop and greatly enjoyed the cars. Being a “gear head” I wanted to know more about the cars themselves.
I talked to as many drivers as I could & bought the booklet but I would loved to know the history of the real race cars that participated. Maybe a print out or a writeup on your web site.
    THANKS to all
