Irene Jason, three-time Grand Champion driver of the Great Race, is recovering nicely after quadruple bypass surgery last week. She is resting at her home in Keller, Texas. She had back pain during the event this summer, but didn’t know what it was. After returning home, she saw a doctor and he told her she might need stints. It was determined last week however that she needed the bypass surgery. Irene and husband Barry have won the last three Great Races – in a 1935 Ford in 2012 and 2013 and in a 1966 Mustang in 2014. Irene is the only female driver to ever win the race, and they are the only ones to ever win the event in a post-war automobile. The couple decided to retire after their victory in 2014.

  • Irene not only has Barry taking care of her (he probably has it calculated down the second every detail), she has her daughter visiting who lives six hours away. She is in good hands all the way around.

  • Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, Irene! The science of heart surgery and related issues can keep those vintage models running with the younger ones for sure!

  • Irene,
