Big Honors for an Outstanding Great Racer

By Great Race
January 14, 2014

Renault

Back in 2012, we were delighted to see Alan and Mary Travis arrive in Traverse City, Michigan with their 1907 Renault. The car was a handful, with major mechanical maintenance and repairs needed before and after each leg of the race, but it was one of the most popular cars of the event. Nearly two years after it completed the Great Race, the car is still in the limelight, as it took home the Director’s Choice award at the inaugural Arizona Concours d’Elegance. Leno is Jealous!

If you followed along with the 2012 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty, then you likely remember the oldest car in competition, the 1907 Renault! It is owned by Alan and Mary Travis, and it’s a spectacular car that withstood 2,300 miles of punishment on this year’s Great Race around the Great Lakes. We just got an email from Alan and Mary with a picture of the Renault sitting in the premier pit spot at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Alan said, “We are racing on Saturday in the Group A and we are the oldest ever to have a Rolex Historics log book.” He continued, “We are in Paddock Spot A1.” How awesome is that…a longtime Great Racer is duking it out at Monterey in an unforgettable car! 1907 Renault Update

April 4, 2012

If you follow our site, then you may have seen our announcement that a 1907 Renault will be competing in the 2012 Great Race! We’ve been following the progress, and just got an update from Alan Travis. Here’s what he had to say:

“Our 1907 Renault A1 Vanderbilt Road going Grand Prix Racer is now finished and now is the time for sorting and performing jobs that are on the punch list. We started the restoration in December (4 months ago) after going for a 5 mile drive in a car that had never been restored but was kept in a running condition for more than 105 years.
