It all starts with the turn of the key and the press of the accelerator to enjoy a Great Race adventure. Our competition is patterned after rallying, one of the oldest automotive competitions in the world, dating back to 1895. The Great Race is a time-speed-endurance rally, a street legal motorsports competition conducted on public roads. Our experienced staff searches for the most scenic, fun-to-drive back roads available for Great Race events.

In 2008, classic cars and motorcycles that are at least 25 years-old and modern cars, powered by renewable-fuel or new technology such as hybrids are eligible to participate. Vehicles that are newer than 25 years-old may be entered, if in the “spirit” of the Great Race and approved by our competition staff.

How the competition works:

The participants must attempt to match a predetermined “perfect” time, as determined by computer.

After determining the assigned speeds and any needed pauses along the course, the exact time for each leg is calculated. Participating teams attempt to match these times for every leg or section during each day on the Race.

Race teams are given a set of course instructions for each day which includes up to 300 driving instructions indicating every stop, start, speed change and turn the competitors will take throughout that day.

Checkpoints located along the route, time the teams as they drive by. Teams are given a penalty point for each second that they are early or late at each checkpoint. At the end of the day, the team’s time is totaled and multiplied by a factor, based on the age of the car. The “factored” time is their score for the day.

Great Race International participants will be given points based on their finish position each day.

Great Race Classic rules will dictate the winner North America. The team with the lowest score at the end of the day will win the day, the total “low” score after 14 days wins the event. In the International Format, the team with the greatest number of points at the finish is declared the winner.
