The Passing of A Great Race Family Member

Mary Bitterman joined the Great Race family in 2011, as a navigator with her husband Michael in their beautiful 1966 Dodge Charger. Since then, the couple have competed in several other vintage car rally events, including additional Great Race events, and have made lots of friends along the way. Unfortunately, Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer, forcing her to fight a battle that no one wants to fight. Despite her condition, she paid us a visit during the early days of this year’s Great Race. We’re so thankful for the Bitterman’s and their passion for the Great Race. Mary passed away earlier this week–her suffering is now over, but that doesn’t make it any easier to say goodbye to a great friend. Please keep Michael Bitterman, and all of Mary’s family and friends in your prayers. • Our condolences to Mike and family! It was heartwarming to visit with Mary in Ogunquit at the beginning of the 2014 Great Race. Her strong spirit and warm smile gave us strength to carry on, as she was so courageous to continue doing. I will always remember our friend Mary whenever I wear my warm fleece jacket she borrowed for the 2012 Great Race around the Great Lakes. It kept her warm and will keep me warm with memories of her.

  • We are so sorry to hear about Mary. She was a remarkable lady who always had a smile. We are keeping Mike and her sons in our prayers.

  • Mike and family, so very sorry to hear of the passing of Mary. She fought the brave fight. Will miss her smile and wit. All the best.

  • My condolences, Mike and family. I had two very special visits with Mary during Great Race 2014, one at the start and a second in Millsboro. She showed such strength and determination, a keen spirit to enjoy every moment she had. Great Racers, along with family have lost a tremendous friend!

  • My heartfelt sorrow for the Bitterman family. I never meet them, but having lost my wife of 33 years to the same horrible thing, I feel for all. To Michael, be strong and God Bless,,,,
