The 2016 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty has been announced, and the event will start in downtown San Rafael, California on the same streets where the movie American Graffiti was filmed in the early 1970s. The 9-day, 2,400-mile antique car rally will kick off Saturday, June 18, 2016, in San Rafael and will visit some amazing sites along the way including the Golden Gate Bridge, the California wine country, Lake Tahoe, the Bonneville Salt Flats, the Rocky Mountains, Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, the Badlands and the Mississippi River.

Plans for racers in San Rafael has been in the works for many months, and they include several private car collections, wine tours, a movie premiere and incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The 2006 Great Race finished in San Rafael as tens of thousands of spectators filled the streets to witness Dave Reeder and Sawyer Stone win the event in their 1916 Hudson Four Passenger Speedster.

The finish will be in Moline, Illinois on Sunday, June 26. Other overnight stops for 2016 include Reno, Nevada at the National Automobile Museum (home to the Thomas Flyer that won the 1908 New York to Paris Great Race); Elko, Nevada, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Rapid City, South Dakota, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The 2015 Great Race finished June 28 on the Santa Monica Pier with Howard and Doug Sharp winning $50,000 in their 1916 Hudson Pikes Peak Hillclimber. More than $158,000 in prize money was awarded to the field of 112 cars. Entries are currently being accepted for the 2016 Great Race, and it is expected to sell out in record time.
