After the longest day of the Great Race – one that will see the participants travel through The Badlands, enter a new time zone and cross the Missouri River – racers will start to arrive in downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at 5:45 p.m. on Friday, June 24. The venue is Phillips Avenue between 6th and 10th Streets, with live music along the Big Sioux River (just above the Falls) and dinner at the Convention and Visitors Bureau at the corner of 8th Street.

The Great Race visit marks the first time since 1996 the event has been to Sioux Falls, and a large crowd is expected downtown for the event. “The first time I was ever in Sioux Falls was in 1994 for the Great Race” director Jeff Stumb said. “There were 20,000 spectators in the streets to cheer on the racers,” he said. “I didn’t even know there were that many people in the entire state of South Dakota.” The race returned to a similar large crowd two years later in 1996, but it has taken 20 years for the event to return.

  • Hi Jeff,
I am Clay Seachris, President of The Great Plains Street Rodders. We are a group of about 350 social cruisers around the Sioux Falls area. The Sioux Falls Convention Visitors Bureau (Jay Kaltenbach) contacted me and asked if the Great Plains Street Rodders would welcome your racers and help them park. We are glad to help, make some new friends, see some cool cars and make your stop go smoothly. I’m here to help you, so keep in touch. Jay mentioned a meeting coming up, but I haven’t heard and June is crazy busy with all kinds of car events. As busy as it is I prefer emails or a text to 605-360-4995, but I’m always glad to talk so again just call that cell#. Most of our members are retired, however I’m not, but if need be my Vice President, Bob Schmeichel is and has been in this hobby much longer than I. I’m also glad to share trusted local car hobby contacts. We have Rita at MotorMarket Magazine which is a regional magazine that a number of club members write for.
