The Gift That Keeps on Giving!

November 14, 2012

I just got a call from Larry Edsel at The Detroit News asking questions about the 2013 Great Race. The News was on hand at the finish of the Great Race in Dearborn this summer and the next morning’s edition had a huge color photo on the front page!

Larry is working on an interesting story for the Christmas Gift Ideas section of the newspaper, which will come out in early December. The newspaper has selected an entry fee in the Great Race as one of their gift ideas.

What a fantastic gift for the man who has everything! It reminded me of how my old rally partner Robert Dinges got involved in the Great Race in 1995. His wife, Debbie, bought him an entry fee as a gift, and the next thing he knew he was heading to Ottawa for the race to Mexico City. I think Robert has competed in more than 10 races since.

Larry wanted to know if there was a cutoff date for entries, and I told him that the cutoff was 100 entries. So I want to remind those who have not entered yet that with all of the attention the Great Race is getting these days in print and on TV I expect to hit the 100-car mark. So don’t wait.

Currently we are at the halfway point with paid entries with more and more coming each day (including a beautiful 1917 American LaFrance that last ran in the 1994 Great Race that a rookie team from Denver has entered).
